Disasters and Emotions
It has always been my life long desire to understand the complexities of human emotional response. The complexities derived not from every single emotional activity of the individual who expresses some kind of response to interpersonal reaction, but to the more basic response to emotional and natural disasters.
Between September 2004 and March 2005, a series of disasters confronted many Caribbean and Asian countries-tsunami and hurricane respectively. These natural disasters, evoked emotional responses in all forms, and rationalism appears non-existent when addressing the problems resulting from these disasters-at least in Grenada where the entire population was affected by hurricane Ivan.
This emotional response, whether or not it has a social base, left the population in a state of despair while seeking emotional solutions to the disaster through the transcendental reality.
As an artist, I am intrigued by these responses, and the thought of what it means for the human species that will experience future disasters. This body of work is an attempt to juxtapose the emotional responses of dealing with the disasters while not addressing the resulting problems of the disaster itself. The body of work also attempts to show that an authority governed by emotions can only respond emotionally while reality remains obscured.
